Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2019 Lake Wylie Riversweep.

Cool weather and a record number of pre-registered volunteers were the right combination for the 17th annual cleanup event held on Saturday, October 5th. More than 750 volunteers and 50 boats mobilized to remove litter and debris for the lake’s 325-mile shoreline.

Organized by the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation and Lake Wylie Marine Commission, this year’s Riversweep collected over 22,000 pounds of debris and trash, including 1,200 plus garbage bags, 90 + tires, 2 refrigerators, 2 docks and a dock roof.

The 2019 results represent the commitment and passion that people have for taking care of the lake and their desire for a hands-on opportunity to protect the local environment. Riversweep was a success for one reason: the volunteers. It’s the people, those who return year after year as well as  first-time volunteers, who have made this cleanup such a success. They are responsible for hauling out all trash, litter, junk, and debris from Lake Wylie this year.

If it’s the first Saturday in October, it’s Lake Wylie Riversweep. Mark your calendar now for next year on the first Saturday in October, October 3rd, when volunteers will again be up and out on the water to take care of this wonderful resource in Riversweep 2020!
